Fentanyl

Background

Fentanyl is a potent synthetic opioid drug that is100 times more potent than morphine and 50 times more potent than heroin, used as a pain reliever in the medical field but now produced illicitly by drug organizations due to its addictive potential, low overhead, and ability to use in producing counterfeit substances for profit.

Quick Facts

  • 6 out of 10 counterfeit pills tested by the DEA contains a lethal dose (>2mg) of fentanyl.

  • Social Media is one of the top sources for fentanyl among youth and young adults

  • Over 60% of overdose deaths involve fentanyl. 

  • There is currently an act in congress that several states are behind that would classify fentanyl as a weapon of mass destruction (WMD)

  • Power of Putnam is directly involved in the DEA's One Pill can Kill education and awareness campaign producing literature, training, and other media for our community. 
     

  • We are actively engaged in our schools and assist with student surveys on drug misuse and sentiment among other things.
